Dear Shay,
Mention the name, Magic Wand, in circles fluent in wellness, pleasure, or iconic design, and recognition is instant. Heads nod with a spark of respect.
It’s a product that has long transcended its original purpose. What began as a humble “personal massager” has evolved into a cultural touchstone—a symbol of sexual liberation, no-nonsense reliability, and downright legendary power.
I have my own origin story with the Wand. Many moons ago, I was navigating the frustrating world of battery-devouring vibrators (RIP to my poor rabbit!). It was one of those Los Angeles nights where you’re just trying to find something that works—no metaphors, just mechanics. I ended up at the old Hustler store on Sunset Boulevard, vibrating with equal parts exasperation and determination. I cornered the first salesperson I could find and practically begged, “I just want something that plugs in.”
Without hesitation, he led me to the back, pulled out a box, and handed it to me like it was sacred text. It read: Hitachi Magic Wand Massager.
“Right,” I thought, eyebrows raised. Massager. Clever.
I haven’t looked back since. I now proudly own one in every size, a personal archive of perfection. No frills. No fakes. Just dependable, delicious power.
But the real story of the Magic Wand stretches far beyond my bedside table.
It all began in 1968, a year so culturally seismic it practically buzzed with revolution. Star Trek aired television’s first interracial kiss. Apollo 8 orbited the moon. The first Boeing 747 took flight. And nestled in that same timeline, the Magic Wand was quietly introduced to the market.
Who could have known then that this unassuming white-and-blue device would go on to become one of the most recognized and beloved products in the world?
Initially marketed simply as a back massager, the device found its true calling thanks to a wave of second-wave feminists and sex-positive pioneers who weren’t afraid to say the quiet part out loud: this thing wasn’t just easing muscle tension—it was blowing minds. Literally.
Today, in a market flooded with sleek, whisper-quiet, USB-charged toys, there’s something refreshingly honest about the Wand. It’s not trying to be discreet. It’s not whispering. It hums with history. It purrs with purpose.
And yes,the Magic Wand Original along with Magic Wand Plus still plugs in.
Let’s go back to the origin and a little history.
We know Vibratex didn’t create the Magic Wand, but you’ve been the brand’s steward for over 25 years. How have you nurtured the brand as its mission evolved from back massager to the most iconic vibrator on earth?
Nurture is the perfect word to describe what we do with the Magic Wand brand. There was always a loyal following for the brand even before Vibratex acquired it. So we just made sure that the characteristics that people loved would always be available, tested for endurance and guaranteed. There are so many options out in the world of wand products and we wanted to keep it simple, lucid and uncomplicated. I feel that’s one of the reasons why it has become such an iconic product. People don’t necessarily need a plethora of modes when using a vibrator, they find a mode they like and they usually stick with it. If it works, it works! Our emphasis on quality, power and longevity makes us fairly unique in this market and that’s something people can always count on with the Magic Wand.

The Magic Wand holds an almost mythical status. What do you think is its 'secret sauce'? Why does it resonate so deeply and consistently with such a diverse range of people across generations?
I chuckled at secret sauce! I think the “secret sauce” is a combination of several things. It doesn’t resemble a sex toy and I feel some people appreciate the idea of using something that doesn't look like a giant vibrating penis. It’s gender neutral. But it has so much power for those who want that, as well as lower vibrations for play on sensitive areas. It can be used solo or by couples. It’s an amazing toy for someone who’s never had an orgasm and doesn’t really know how to initiate one.
The Magic Wand can almost guarantee achieving an orgasm with use that doesn’t require anything except lay back and enjoy. And seriously, Moms used it way back in the day for sore muscles and if they used it on their inner thighs they found intriguing sensations that were not expected. This happened because of that wonderful internal anatomy of the clitoral nerves and the power of the wand. What a great discovery that you didn’t have to touch your vulva with a vibrator in order to have an orgasm! Now that’s secret sauce!

Over the years, you must have heard countless stories. Are there any particularly surprising, funny, or heartwarming anecdotes from customers that stand out?
It’s always heartwarming to hear from someone who says that they’ve never had an orgasm before they found the Magic Wand. Or, how it’s helped intimacy with their partner or even the discovery of their own body. Over the decades we’ve received phone calls, letters (yes snail mail) and emails from people who have said the Magic Wand has changed their lives. There was one elderly gentleman who lived in a retirement home and had several lady friends (as he called them) and he would order wands for all of them for their playtime together. I thought that was great! One grandmother used it strictly for massage and left it in her living room for back massage and would tell everyone who came over that she loved her Magic Wand.
I also received a DM from a young woman traveling solo all over the world and had her trusty Magic Wand with her at all times and said she probably would have come home early if she didn’t have the Wand with her. What a great travel partner! No arguing, complaining or wanting to do something different than what she wanted.
How have you seen the conversation around sex toys, personal massagers, and pleasure evolve since the Magic Wand first appeared? What role do you feel the brand has played in that shift?
I think the evolution of acceptance has been amazing. I’ve always alluded to the idea that the show Sex and the City made that possible. Women on TV talking about their sex lives, the problems they encounter, the things they explore to improve their understanding of intimacy and what they want. I think it allowed women back then to feel comfortable saying they have sex, they love sex and they want sex.
The Magic Wand was in several episodes along with some other Vibratex products and it allowed women to see a sex toy and not be intimidated by them. Since that show women have been more comfortable having conversations with others and that just opened up new generations to come into this world knowing it was normal to talk about sex, to have sex, have orgasms and take ownership of one's own sexuality.

Looking ahead, where do you see the Magic Wand brand heading? Are there new innovations, directions, or conversations you're particularly excited about exploring?
We are always looking ahead in exploring the expansion of the Magic Wand without losing its core identity. We have some things in the pipeline that we’re working on that hopefully will be released soon. But I can’t say what it is right now!
If the Magic Wand itself had a personality, how would you describe it? (Reliable? Powerful? Unassuming but mighty?)
I think the Wand’s personality would be reliably refined, but with an inner roar; pleasurable predictability emphasized by an impulsive playful streak. It is all the qualities of your lifelong best friend that you know you are lucky to have found. One who would bail you out of jail and not say anything but would always be there for you no matter what you need. That’s a best friend for life.
Imagine a museum creating an exhibit dedicated to the Magic Wand. What single item, story, or artifact would absolutely have to be the centerpiece to capture its essence and history?
The Original Magic Wand 100%! It started this conversation of “it’s okay for women to have orgasms” and is unapologetic about it.
What has your personal journey been like working with such an iconic brand? What does the Magic Wand represent to you personally?
The Magic Wand represents power, dignity, longevity. It has spanned the sexual revolution for decades and always stays true to itself. At Vibratex, we’re honored to have been entrusted as the Ambassador for this iconic brand. We help guide and support this giant personality while letting it speak for itself.
Who else in the Magic Wand family has had a deep impact with its inception that you would like to mention?
The Magic Wand Waterproof and the Magic Wand Mini have been game changers for the wand community. People have been asking for years for a waterproof version and it took us a while to perfect it without losing power or endurance. We finally achieved that and it’s been well loved from the moment it was released. The Magic Wand Mini was another that took some time to develop. We had to make the wand smaller but not lose that rumbly power that everyone loves. When we got that down the response was fantastic. We may take a long time to release products but there’s so much thought, testing and QC we do. It’s time well spent

Before we wrap up this fascinating dive into an icon, let's pause for our virtual tea, keeping with the "Tea for Two" theme! If we were sharing an afternoon cuppa, which of these would you choose?
Chamomile or Lavender Blend - This speaks to the "self-care" aspect often linked with wellness products and the calming nature of a tea.
Classic Earl Grey - The hint of bergamot gives it a distinct character without being overpowering.
Spicy Chai - This choice brings warmth, boldness, and a bit of spice to the table.
Sugar? Yes? Or No? Of yes, how many lumps/spoons?
Milk? Yes? No?
Oh Melanie!!! Definitely Spicy Chai just the way it is. It sums up the Magic Wand and it sums up me all in one cup!
